Google will pay for 890 MW of new nuclear capacity from upgrades at 11 Constellation reactors, plus a 15-year deal for 2,700 MW, with more than $4.3 billion of investment behind it

The two companies' joint release: a 20-year power purchase agreement funds equipment and technology upgrades at nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the first uprate due by 2028, on a grid that serves 67 million people; Constellation will also build Gemini Enterprise workflows into its plant operations.

Google and Constellation Energy announced on 6 October "a long-term strategic clean energy collaboration to bring 890 megawatts (MW) of new, reliable nuclear capacity onto the PJM Interconnection grid".

The deal. A "20-year power purchase agreement will enable investments in new equipment and technology at 11 Constellation-owned nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, increasing thermal and electrical efficiency to unlock additional reliable, firm power". The release calls the capacity "entirely new" and says it "represents more than $4.3 billion of new investment by Constellation", sustaining "roughly 4,400 existing jobs" and creating "approximately 7,200 new construction jobs during the building period". Alongside it, "a 15-year energy supply agreement for an additional 2,700 MWs in PJM's fleet" - a financial structure the release says "ensures that Constellation's operating generation assets continue to deliver energy and capacity to the PJM market". The first uprate is "expected to be delivered by 2028".

Why uprates. Upgrading "turbines, steam generators, and digital control systems at operating plants" delivers capacity "without the multi-year timelines or interconnection bottlenecks associated with greenfield construction"; the 890 MW "equals the output of several Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) or a large new conventional reactor". Google's Amanda Peterson Corio: the agreement "will strengthen the PJM grid, which serves 67 million people, all while protecting energy affordability and supporting local union jobs".

The AI half. Constellation "selected Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise under an expanded five-year technology alliance" and "will build Gemini Enterprise agentic workflows directly into its core operations": site selection and interconnection planning, asset health and outage management, and securing operational-technology networks, "many of these networks are air-gapped".

What the release does not say. No price per megawatt-hour, no figure for what Google itself will spend, and no named data centre. The release frames the deal as a response to PJM's "Bring Your Own Power" proposal and "the White House Ratepayer Protection Pledge" - new supply funded by the buyer, "without passing on costs to residential customers".
