How we check

A figure is read off the primary source, or attributed to the party claiming it, or cut. Four outlets agreeing is four copies of one press release, not verification. Where a primary source cannot be reached, the item says who is claiming it and the block is noted in our audit.

Holds - the claim is what the source says.

Overstated - true in the narrow sense the maker means, false in the sense a reader will take.

False - the source says otherwise.

Unverified - no primary source exists and the claimant is named.

Every claim we have checked is listed in the Ledger with its verdict, its date and a link to the source. It is the record of our work and it is public.

A mistake is corrected in the next issue under the section it appeared in, named as a correction, and recorded in the Ledger's Corrections tab. Never silently.

No Move runs untested. Every prompt or step we recommend was run by us on real material before it went in, and the issue says what it returned.
