Truth Check/28 September 2026
“Google is launching an orbital AI data centre”
The claim as it travelled: coverage of Project Suncatcher, Sept 2026.
Overstated
The claim goes further than the page that produced it.
Google's page describes a hardware survival test of TPUs in orbit, 'seeing what works, identifying points of failure', not a data centre; the date and TPU count are coverage.

- Google puts its first TPUs into orbit next week - a survival test, not a data centre
Project Suncatcher's first satellite rides SpaceX's Transporter-18 to see whether Google's AI chips survive launch, radiation and heat in a vacuum. The 1 October date is the coverage's; Google's page says 'next week'.
